Mercury Systems closed today at $108.10, up 11.3% on the regular session and roughly 16% from the prior close once after-hours prints are folded in. The trigger was a single press release: Mercury won a multi-year contract to deliver 1,000 RTBX06 BuiltSECURE servers through Blue Raven, a defense-industry distributor. The dollar value was not disclosed, which is normal. What is not normal is that this is the largest single production order in company history for the Common Processing Architecture franchise - the platform Mercury has been pitching for two years as the trusted compute layer for AI distributed across the battlespace. The market is starting to take the pitch seriously.
The same session saw the broader drone and autonomy complex pop on a CNBC report that the administration is considering equity stakes in domestic drone manufacturers. Kratos and AeroVironment ran double-digit on that headline alone. Mercury rode the sympathy because it is the cleanest defense electronics name positioned at the intersection where compute, autonomy, and missile defense all converge - and because the market woke up to a thesis that has been sitting in the source documents for months.
Here is the question this memo asks: when a $6.5 billion defense electronics name has just printed a fresh all-time high above the highest sell-side price target on the Street, while every insider with a fundamental view has been selling into strength and an activist hedge fund on the board has booked roughly $149 million across four tranches at an $86 cost basis - what are you actually buying at $108? Is this a turnaround story that has run too far, or a compute-platform name the comp set has not caught up to yet?
My view, in one sentence and no further: Drones will play an outsized role in tomorrow’s militaries. DAWG will be an entirely new branch for the US Military. 57 billion USD will be spent over the next 2-5 years. The full answer - what I think Mercury is actually worth, the comp anchor that gets me there, the four falsification thresholds that would change my mind, and where the cascade chain leaks for this specific name - sits behind the paywall, where the work belongs. But for those who are wondering, my thoughts. I am bullish on the entire drone sector. KTOS, AVAV, NOC, LMT, ANDURIL/SHIELD (WHEN THEY IPO), I am looking to establish positions in all of them.
Another important little teaser for next week. The rise of drones necessarily brings with it the rise of anti-drone weaponry. Prime candidates are directed energy weapons. And there is a very specific company I have been looking at.
